The Northumberland coast is designated an area ‘Of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. A coastal path runs the length of the county, from Berwick upon Tweed on the Scottish border to St Mary’s Island and lighthouse at Whitley Bay.
This is ‘South Beach’, which runs from the mouth of the River Aln down to the mouth of the River Coquet at Amble. A superb 5 mile stretch of golden sand and dunes, South Beach is difficult to access as there is no road that directly leads to it, only a very rough farm track. However, at Puffin Cottage we have a couple of mountain bikes for you to borrow so you can cycle round to it.
The Northumberland coastline from Berwick to Tynemouth is popular with Surfers and Kite surfers, with beaches and bays that rival Cornwall for surf. These pictures where taken at Budle Bay, with Lindesfarne Castle in the background.
South of Amble there is a nature reserve and country park at Durridge Bay.
